Retrospectiva e Perspectivas do Design Instrucional e Educação a Distância: Análise da Literatura

Resumo

Em meados dos anos 60, o engenheiro de sistemas e estudioso norte-americano Leonard Silvern, à época trabalhando sobre a aplicação do enfoque sistêmico (“systems approach”) no planejamento pedagógico (“instructional design”), fez uma apresentação, com meios múltiplos (“multimedia presentation”) sobre este assunto. Utilizava as tecnologias de ponta da época – um conjunto de slides sincronizados a uma áudio-fita, um texto suplementar e uma série de grandes cartazes, que apresentavam uma análise sistêmica detalhada do processo de elaboração (“synthesis”), avaliação e utilização de materiais didáticos de alta qualidade, nos contextos do ensino presencial e à distância.

Este fato é mencionado neste artigo por três motivos. Primeiro, para ilustrar que a mais de quarenta anos atrás, apesar das tecnologias de comunicação serem bem menos sofisticadas que hoje em dia, as preocupações práticas e a linguagem conceitual/teórica dos estudiosos na nova área de tecnologia de educação, eram as mesmas de agora, ou pelo menos parecidas. O segundo motivo é para ilustrar, pelo confronto de alguns termos técnicos na língua inglesa já utilizados naquela época, com suas definições traduzidas para língua portuguesa, a frequência, hoje em dia, do fenômeno de “re-inventar a roda”ou de “colocar vinho velho em garrafas novas”, muitas vezes por motivos não muito claros, quer sob o ponto de vista linguístico, científico e até ético. O terceiro motivo – talvez mais importante no atual contexto – é para citar, a primeira frase da trilha sonora da áudio-fita que apresentou o enfoque sistêmico: The human race can be divided in three categories: analysts, synthesysts and knuckleheads”. Com esta frase, que não pretendemos traduzir literalmente (só lembrar que “knucklehead” é uma gíria que significa cabeça dura), Silvern quis comunicar que é raro, na prática, encontrar pessoas que sejam igualmente hábeis nas áreas de pensamento analítico (desdobramento e compreensão de uma complexidade) e pensamento sintético (a solução de problemas inéditos ou criação de novas idéias pela integração de conceitos básicos e experiências prévias). Mais adiante na sua apresentação, Silvern usou um novo termo técnico – “anasynthesis”- para descrever a habilidade de combinar o alto grau de pensamento analítico com o pensamento sintético (criativo). Este termo não sobreviveu. Mas, um outro termo com o mesmo sentido – “systems thinking” – entrou na linguagem técnica, não apenas de engenheiros de sistemas, mas também de administradores de empresas, psicólogos, pedagogos e tecnólogos educacionais. Como ocorre, com certa frequência, na área da educação, o “enfoque sistêmico”, após gozar de grande popularidade entre os educadores, nas décadas de 1960-1970, foi amplamente rejeitado pelas novas gerações de educadores, nas décadas de 1980-1990. Mas, hoje, está voltando com força redobrada, como “mola-mestre” das metodologias de planejamento de melhorias educacionais, seja a nível “macro” de instituições, setores, ou até sistemas nacionais de educação, seja a nível “micro” de cursos, aulas individuais ou materiais didáticos para objetivos específicos. Esta volta é oportuna e pode ajudar muito na qualidade da nova Educação a Distância (EAD) no Brasil. Sabemos que a tecnologia de Internet, ou qualquer outra, não fará o milagre de resolver os problemas educacionais do país. Isto não aconteceu com o uso do rádio, da televisão e do impresso,com as quais o Brasil teve projetos significativos; nem acontecerá com as novas tecnologias interativas. A não ser que se tenha um projeto educacional de país, projeto coerente e consistente do nível político ao pedagógico e de gestão. As bases do enfoque sistêmico são importantes para o planejamento, desenvolvimento, avaliação e gestão de projetos de forma integrada, quer sejam de grande, médio ou pequeno portes.

Há ainda um quarto motivo para uso dos parágrafos anteriores como introdução ao artigo que segue. É uma forma para justificar o valor de, às vezes, se dar uma olhada para trás para orientar passos à frente. A atual edição da Revista Brasileira de Aprendizagem Aberta e à Distância (RBAAD) é a primeira do seu terceiro ano de publicação. Está sendo colocada no ar ao apagar das luzes de 2004 e início de 2005. Como de praxe em diversos orgãos – jornais, canais de rádio e TV, e outras revistas – esta é uma oportunidade para fazermos uma retrospectiva do ano que passou, analisando eventos do passado para avaliar o progresso, e sintetizar algo para o futuro: novas políticas, novas estratégias, ou pelo menos algumas boas intenções resumidas na forma de resoluções para o ano que se inicia. O artigo que segue é uma forma de retrospectiva. A primeira parte é uma análise de artigos publicados e assuntos discutidos na RBAAD nos seus dois anos de existência. Porém, é uma retrospectiva seletiva, restrita aos artigos e outros trabalhos que abordaram o tópico “design instrucional” de materiais didáticos para sistemas de EAD. O foco selecionado reflete os interesses científicos e pessoais dos autores do artigo, mas também, o crescente grau de interesse pelo assunto entre a atual geração de profissionais que se dedicam ao planejamento e à implementação da EAD. A segunda parte do artigo é uma retrospectiva de meio-século da literatura de base sobre design instrucional. Para controle do tamanho do projeto, já bastante ambicioso, limitamos nossa análise aos livros mais significativos publicados entre 1954 e 2004; livros especificamente escritos sobre design instrucional e outros que formam as bases teóricas e filosóficas desta disciplina. Afinal, são os livros que preservam o que é melhor e mais útil de qualquer disciplina. O enfoque selecionado é o sistêmico, como ilustrado acima: um método de pensamento analítico, sintético e avaliativo sobre o tema.
